One of the constant pitfalls of songwriting is sounding too much like yourself. I get attached to certain rhythms or chords or ways of singing and sometimes have a hard time escaping my own “sound”. I’ve avoided playing acoustic guitar for just this reason and yet it’s always been the easiest way for me to write songs.
This demo version of Romance Is Rubbish finds me comfortably nestled in harmonies and 6/8 time, but keep an eye out for the EP version. It’ll surely surprise you. Also, the title of this song references an old, favorite Seattle band. Any guesses (without Googling it)?
lyrics
we used to be strangers before we were friends
and i never knew that you noticed me then
a city without you seems so fucking impossible now
we used to be friends and then we were lovers
like snakes in the cushions or mice in the cupboards and no one could tell where you ended or where i began
we used to be lovers and then we were friends
it was so complicated before holding hands
lie on the bed and we'd lie to each other
and listen to Spoon while we spooned
we used to be friends and then we were strangers
sitting apart in the same movie theater
watching two people do everything
that we used to do
The Graze is easily my favorite band in Seattle. Louis O'Callahan's writing style is right up my alley, it doesn't do him justice to say but he could be Kurt Cobain and Jeff Mangum's bastard child. The Way It Is
My Seattle friends Levi and Casey are two of the most talented musicians I know. Check out this wonderful album written and recorded in one weekend... The Way It Is
