The way things have been for me lately, feels as though I might never see the light at the end of this... Tunnel vision prevents me from seeing the beauty around me and... whether or not I should see you as... A threat or a blessing This blow-up mattress I sleep on is leaking air from a tiny hole there's so much shit in my room my room is not my own and ironically in this mess of life and possessions there is nothing to keep me warm... A thread or a blessing
2.
I'm not your boyfriend Your boyfriend's still in bed I'm just a ghost though your boyfriend isn't dead I just want ice cream and to get a little sleep And to have sex more than once a week I'm not your boyfriend
3.
You never knew what you would do When the choice to go or stay was put upon you Put on your best face, puff out your chest But your patience for me is the true test I can only stand so much use of words like "bittersweet" We both know there's no such thing as a compromise Fair weather friend Farewell, my friend It was good to see but better to leave you And I can stand to do without being So polite and cordial
4.
We flipped a coin to decided Which ice cream we'd take home You chose heads for Vanilla Fudge But Rocky Road won I couldn't stand to see you not get what you want

I'll never know what it's like to have Your freckles on my nose Your husband looks sweet in his suit and tie "But tell me... how did he propose?" You seem such a match at the parties you throw With laughs and smiles dipped in wine But I sense in his gaze there is something amiss And I wonder if you see it in mine

You can't eat them Although you might want to You can't eat them But you can lay your head Onto them

Abby's hair is red And all the things she says to you Make her seem put off But her favorite color's blue Or was it green like her eyes? This girl was born on the Fourth of July, Nineteen Seventy-Six Somewhere up North Hello, Dr. Mom Hello, Dr. Dad Where there are no spuds to eat Does Abby get sad? And if, Heaven forbid, she should die today She knows exactly what her stone would say, "It's worse." Death's more like Hell than Somewhere up North Abby's hair is red And all the things she says to you Make her seem put off But her eyes are green and blue
11.
She says my glass is half empty But I'm hard-tied to agree It's just leaky And one day it'll break in two And one day it'll crack in half And I'll be a big joke And everyone will laugh At the man who's glass is half empty
12.
This damn dog is running circles all around the kids in the backyard And the sun is almost down, it's orange rays setting fire To every leaf on every tree on this hillside that is ours And all the birds have called it a day In the only way a bird can call it a day Your hair smells like silver If silver had a smell it would be the most beautiful smell And the wine is all drunk up and our bellies filled with luck of all The days and nights we've spent together since the day we first met And I wonder if this is the time of my life This cat is standing up on the screendoor in the kitchen And your sitting at the table with your face stuck and your wishing There was cash enough for coffee Or the coffee was as good as we remember And we can not forget about the morning songs the birds sing out And how our feet feel underneath the blankets and the old laundry Laughing in each other faces, morning breath and intimacies You say, "I don't want to have sex. Push your back against my breasts And let me wrap my arms around you. Let me lie here and figure out If this is the time of my life."

Timber 04:41
I swear when that tree fell on me I thought it would hurt more than it did And everyone around me Stood in shock and said, "He should be dead." Granted I did feel a little light-headed Like I was standing above everybody else

Where do we go now? Travelled 3,000 miles away from you And I find myself in a strange place This timezone's got me all fucked And I want to call you up
16.
And the snow It wont stop falling It isn't romantic anymore I can't find my car Forgot where I parked it I know its here somewhere And under the guise of being cool I'll act nonchalant Like it's no big deal Being stuck here with you And the new guy you've been seeing Talk about awkward If only I hadn't come over Last night to tell you how I feel
17.
Dar Williams 03:40
Dar Williams When I saw you at the show How could you know I was watching you? You played on your guitar a song about a bar I’ll never be as cool as you That day in the store you played You never knew my mind was made up And you’re so big now for a folk singer You must make a killing You’re a modern version, a humdinger Just like Bob Dylan says Last time I could afford to see one of your shows was when you played with Holly Near And that was years ago How could I know your popularity would exceed my fear That day in the store you played You never knew my mind was made up And you’re so big now for a folk singer You must make a killing You’re a modern version, a humdinger Just like Bob Dylan says

we held hands through the crowd on the way to the restrooms we sat close at the show arm in arm and shoulder to shoulder later at the bus stop you reached for my glasses and gave me the blurriest smile i've seen in a while

we share the cat and the kitchen is a mess, isn't it? i will pretend not to care, i don't give a shit you are the best friend that i've ever had and i'll call you a bear we shared a porch and a homey and bar he came for you from the farthest of far you were the best thing that i ever saw until i saw you for you we had our nicknames and similarities you had the row boat scraping up your knees i was the pinnacle of best dressed men and then i fell down again you've got the house and the car, best of luck i will not pretend to care, i don't give a fuck you were the best friend that i ever had and i'll call you a hare we had our nicknames and similarities you had the row boat scraping up your knees i was the pinnacle of best dressed men and then i fell down again

She said what are you doing here? And I said that I wasn't sure And she said why don't you come inside? And I asked if it was alright We had mint tea and sniffed around the kitchen And blinked at each other in the moonlight The shadows in Madison feel like a time machine I have never been high On anything or anyone like I am with you right now She said I was forward for reaching forward To touch her hand She said I'll be your friend And I thought that that was fair
21.
we used to be strangers before we were friends and i never knew that you noticed me then a city without you seems so fucking impossible now we used to be friends and then we were lovers like snakes in the cushions or mice in the cupboards and no one could tell where you ended or where i began we used to be lovers and then we were friends it was so complicated before holding hands lie on the bed and we'd lie to each other and listen to Spoon while we spooned we used to be friends and then we were strangers sitting apart in the same movie theater watching two people do everything that we used to do

You look good with that meat on your bones And I like your headphones And I always thought that we could've been Such good friends Remember the time called you up "Come over and sing Seven-Up." And your pretty blues were just about all I could see You'll never come back to me 'Cause you never left You'll never come back to me Because you never left
24.
When will you know what you want? When will you know what you need? When will you know what you want from life? Or what you want of me? Will you ever know what you want? Will you ever know? Will you ever know what you want? Will you ever know? I remember the time You were with a boy that you liked And you rode up and down The streets of our town with him And you said that he liked you And you said that you liked him But only because of "those things he does for me" Will you ever know what you want? Will you ever know? Will you ever know what you want? Will you ever know? Now I see that those days are done Now I see that that boy is gone But it's only because he wasn't interesting It's only because he didn't satisfy you Will you ever know what you want? Will you ever know? Will you ever know what you want? Will you ever know?

Erin, she's cool, she's calm, she's collected Unlike me, I'm climbing the ceilings And I know she's somewhat disconnected From all that we used to be And she pulls on another cigarette She's trying to forget About all of the wonderful things we could be Erin, she's cool, she's calm, she's collected She is tired and sick of trying so hard And I know she'd love to let me come back If I hadn't broken her heart And she drags on another cigarette And she's starting to forget About all of the wonderful things we could be And I say, "Erin, open your eyes my love Can't you see this is killing me?" And she says, "Sorry, I know that it hurts, But I'm not sure that we are where we're meant to be." Erin, she's cool, she's calm, she's collected Laying alone on a bed made for two And I know that she don't think about me But I wish to God that she would Maybe she drags on another cigarette And she's starting to forget About all of the wonderful things we could be And I sa,y "Erin, open your eyes my love Can't you see this is killing me?" And she says, "Sorry, I know that it hurts, But I'm not sure that we are where we're meant to be."

Best of Luck 02:41
"Are you out of your mind, dude?" I asked as I poured myself another glass He said, "No, man." And leaned on the trash can He stubbed out his butt and Laughed and shook his head "How do you know if she really loves you? its not like you havent made this mistake before." He said, "I just know. As sure as the wind blows, As thin as my hair goes, This is the real thing." And later I went home Feeling a bit stoned Thought long and hard about What I said And either he's stupid Or dealing with Cupid As long he's not just out for a quick fuck I wish him the best of luck

about

On February 10th 2008, I began posting rare and unreleased tracks from my personal collection of recordings on my website with the idea of keeping my band THE WAY IT IS in the front of people's minds on a weekly basis. I called the experiment THE WEEKLY WARBLE and continued posting semi-regularly until August 29th 2009 when I ran out of material.

Since officially pulling the plug on THE WAY IT IS a couple months ago I thought it'd be nice to post a collection of the original tracks for any interested parties. A collection of covers will follow shortly.

If you're interested in my current musical project ELECTRIC DYLAN, you can find that here:
